Oneironaught - Progressive Rock

There are some guys I would like to introduce to you, their band is called Oneironaught, from New York. Even if this is not the kind of music I usually listen to, I was amazed by them, from the first to the last note of their album "Enlist Today".

The intro starts with The Schillinger Escape Plan. A gentle drum, a good bass, and a present electric guitar. You're waiting. You're waiting again. But the lyrics never come. And the first track lasts about 7 minutes 30 seconds. But you know, they are not the first band having an intro without a single word, so that's fine.

With the second track, you realize these guys just don't have any singer. That the whole album is instrumental. And this is something audacious, and adventurous. The album has 7 songs, all lasting a respectable amount of time, some 3-4 minutes, some 7-8 and one even lasts 11 minutes. With a singer, a band can play the same melody during a good amount of time, because the lyrics cover it, you focus on the words and the riff instead of the actual music. Without lyrics, you can't have a repetitive rhythm. You must have a diversity and variety of sounds/cadences in your song in order to keep the attention and not becoming boring. And Oneironaught achieves it brilliantly.

These guys are young, but I find them particularly talented. All of their songs are different, some put the electric guitar on the first plan, others the bass, others the drum. I feel some Black Sabbath influences, as well as some from Radiohead. I'm definitely not an expert in Rock, so I can't really say more about it, but they flirt between Rock, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal.

The only thing I'm not a fan of is the electronic passage they have in the song 'Your Body is responding Incredibly Well (to the Pregnancy)'. The song starts with a piano intro, which I find great. But at some point, the song takes an electro turn, at around 2 minutes 20. I'm not a fan of electro. In any cases. (I've tried to like it, but it's not for me) I don't really like this kind of 30 seconds electro interlude, but after that, it goes away and it's replaced by a fast and loud guitar. The kind of rhythm that you would find in Tarantino's movies. They made it better after, but, yeah, it bothers me.

This is the kind of music I listen to when I have to work. I'm not distracted by words, the music is not brutal (so no desire to headbang!) but I still enjoy their sound.
